...................“THE THREE BROTHERS WHO TAUGHT ME TO SHOW RESPECT BY FORCE”....................
Prior to the creation of Ekiti state in 1996, I lived in Ikere-Ekiti with my family which was comprised of my pops, mom, my elder sister(sister Tomi🥰), my younger sister and our last born at the time(motun🥰) and atimes one of either aunt Mariam or my uncle Ayuba. Normally I was aunt Mariam’s nemesis whenever mom wasn’t around🤦🏽‍♂, uncle Ayuba on the other hand was an unusually gentle and reserved creature who was never bothered by my stubbornness🤗.
Around that period, pops worked outside town, he’d leave for his station in Orun-Ekiti on Monday morning and returned home on Friday evening. I always dreaded his return on Friday because I certainly always got flogged when he returned🥶.
Before he leaves on Monday morning, I always got a new pencil from him, but by the time he returned on Friday, the pencil had already became history🙄.

The pencils pops normally gave me then were unique in that while the common pencils had red erazers, these pencils had white erazers and since I had no idea how and whence he got them, I couldn’t get a duplicate once I misplaced the one he gave me(which hardly took me two or three days to misplace anyway....😏) so, on Friday when he returned, pencil was gone, I got flogged for been careless……normal routine😂!
During the week while pops was away from home, I played with the kids in the neighbourhood. Usually I got along fine with kids of my age range, but those kids who were a bit older than I was, we don’t always get along fine. There were these particular three brothers who lived in the house next to mine(Ade, Ope, and Pelu) they were of the same father, but from different mothers. Ade and Ope were agemates and were a bit older than my elder sister, pelu was younger than my sister but still older than me. I regularly taunt and abuse them because they attended a public primary school and couldn’t speak any English🙅🏽‍♂.......(they only spoke the ikere dialect and maybe some scant and heavily accented Yoruba....🙄) and they were always poorly dressed and dirty looking, so I don’t like them and I constantly taunt and abuse them.
I’d snuck up on them where they’d be doing their own playing, call them some stupid names, and flee🏃🏾🏃🏾🏃🏾..... They’d gave chase, but they dare not follow me up the stairs that led to our apartment out of fear of my pops🤗. Then I’d stood on the verandah and throw stones, sticks, papers, and other rubbish at them. They’d swore at me angrily and promised to deal with me when they catch me one day. I’d laugh at them and make offensive facial grimaces at them from the safety of our verandah.....🥴😛😝😜. Soon, they’d leave and go back to their house.
This went on and on for months, then one day they got creative and devised a scheme that eventually got me caught😂........
It was an evening, the sun was lazily rounding off its daily trip from the east to the west for the day. I came downstairs to poke fun at the boys as usual, I did what I normally do to them, and took flight.........as usual, the three of them chased after me and we went through the normal routine and they went back.
I meant to quietly snuck up on them and taunt them again, unknown to me, when they chased after me the previous time I taunted them, only Ade and Pelu went back, Ope had cleverly hidden under the stairs of our house and patiently waited for me to come back for more taunting.
Meanwhile, oblivious of the trap that had been set for me, I stealthily descended the stairs, tip toed towards them in anticipation of another bout. Soon as I snuck up on the other two who pretended to turned their backs at my approach, I shouted some offensive jibes at them and made to run as usual, then ope dashed out from under the stairs and grabbed me, he covered my mouth with his hands so that I won't be able to scream and alert anyone in the house, then the other two came and together, they whisked me off.
They bodily carried me to the back of an abandoned mud house at the back of our house, laid me flat on my belly and dealt with me very well😂.
Ope kept one of his
hands over my mouth, and used the other hand to pin my two hands to my back, Pelu held my feet with his hands, and Ade gave a very good flogging to my bum with a very good cane. Then they switched places so that all three had a go at my bum to their satisfaction.

When they had satisfied their thirst for vengeance, they let go of me and ordered me to prostrate and apologize to them. By then, all stubbornness had left my body as I was terrified they’d kill me if I don’t cooperate. So, With a voice laden with fear and soaked in tears, I prostrated and apologized and called them Boda and promised never ever to abuse them again......
Then they let me go......
I never ever thought of abusing them again from that day on! Infact, I became so scared of them that whenever I laid eyes on them, I took to my heels🏃🏾🏃🏾🏃🏾🏃🏾……even when they weren’t paying attention to me. And in the off chance that I got so unfortunate enough to come face to face with any of them🥶, I’d prostrate and greet them and call them Boda.......😂😂
