Democracy Day 2018
PRESS RELEASE
#DemocracyDay 2018
AKURE, May 29 2018 -- Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party (ANRP) Ondo State Chapter wishes the people of Ondo State and all Nigerians a happy democracy day. Today marks the 19th consecutive year of uninterrupted democratic dispensation in Nigeria.
Prior to the advent of this democratic journey that began in 1999, it is instructive to note that Nigeria had only 10 years of democratic rule in 39 years of coexistence since independence and as such make today's celebration a great milestone.
We indeed have a freer Press and Courtrooms than what was obtainable under military rule but there are still scenarios that have haunted our democracy. These scenarios include the defiance of court rulings and injunctions, violent clampdown on peaceful protests, many Nigerians languishing in highly congested prisons still awaiting trials and so on. These have featured constantly in every administration from 1999 till date.
On the other hand, can we call today a day of celebration? Do Nigerians really have sufficient cause to celebrate democracy day? What have been the dividends of 19 years of uninterrupted democracy?
The theme of this year's democracy day, "PEACE BUILDING AND GOOD GOVERNANCE FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT" reminds us of the unimpeded massacre of Nigerians in North Central, Nigeria by alleged herdsmen and the seemingly unending Boko Haram in North Eastern, Nigeria. The theme clearly reminds us of the unanswered question of stable power supply and the ever increasing infrastructure deficit that have plagued National development.
Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party (ANRP) has taken the bull by the horn and has begun to exemplify from within the kind of democracy it intends to give Nigeria. We had a successful National Congress on 17 February this year, in barely 8 weeks of full registration by INEC. Between 7 April and this past weekend we have had 32 successful State Congresses and a governorship primary election in Ekiti, all conducted with minimal fuss and with the highest democratic standards all within 5 months.
We dare say that the best thing that ever happened to Nigeria's democracy in the last 19 years is Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party (ANRP). To Nigeria's ailing democracy, we can only tell you that ANRP is on the way!
