WHAT'S IN A NAME? (ADE FAFILA)
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
Driving along the road on Tuesday morning, a minibus overtook my car. No big deal, no offence. I was somewhat slow, as I didn’t have a pressing need to make me hurry. But I spotted the painted crown logo and the inscription, ROLEX, on the front passenger door of the rather decrepit minibus. Hmmmmmmm, everybody loves a good name, but it is not so easy to build one, I mused.
I am very sure the driver of that minibus does not own a Rolex, an authentic Rolex; and he most probably does not also know that some people had worked conscientiously, for many years, to give the Rolex brand the global acclaim. Name!
Except in very rare cases, everybody wants a name to be proud of, like the Rolex brand, but very few people are willing to pay the price. Great names, good names, influential names, inconsequential names, bad names, whether we like it or not, we would end up with one – depending on our works.
As it is written in the Bible, A good name is rather to be chosen than riches (Prov. 22:1).
That’s the challenge.
The difference between a good name and a bad one is usually the attitude to worldly wealth. Hurry to riches and trade away your name!
Our rulers between 1999 and 2015 preferred worldly riches and dumped us in a mess.
They soiled their names, and they are now apologizing. Whether the apologies would be taken is another kettle of fish.
Their successors from 2015 are watching. Are they learning anything? I doubt much!
Our dear old First Lady is defending her ownership of $15.5million after her hubby’s rule of just six years. $15.5million! USD! Abacha’s N116billion loot is to be repatriated soon. Billion! 1, 2, 3, 4……..116billion! A billion Naira would be exhausted in 25years if it is spent at the rate of N110,000 per day, or 50years, if spent at the rate of N55,000 per day. Please, remember that the minimum wage in Nigeria is N18,000 per month. The Bible is perfect – He that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent (Prov. 28:20).
Sergei Mavrodi of the infamous MMM is gone, leaving the world at the age of 62, and the name and what it represents leave very bitter memories; William Shakespeare spent only 52years on earth and left indelible mark in the sand of time; Martin Luther King Jr died at 39, Robert Nesta Marley (Bob Marley) died at 36, and their names remain unforgettable, for the right reasons. Their works were positively great. Their lives were not seen from the angle of how much money they made, but from what they did and what they stood for.
What’s in a name?!
