THE MISTAKE OF THE CHURCH (Adebowale Ibukun Tosin)

Evidently, several youths are tired of church. The old conservative approach void of serious bible study and training in prayer is too weak to keep them in church. While the sermon is on, many are either on twitter, Instagram, Facebook or Whatsapp, just chatting away their time. Quite interesting is how some of these young folks attend church only because their parents have made it compulsory. Left to many of them, they would easily boycott church and just have fun by hanging out with their friends or be watching movies at home. So, here's the simple logic...

The church doesn't want to lose these guys. They are vibrant, youthful, energetic, and smart. As a matter of fact, it's widely believed that the future of any organisation, nation, even church depends on the youths. So, in a bid to not lose them, many churches would give them what they want. No matter what it takes!

I've seen youth vigils that were nothing more than clubs in the name of praise night. All manner of reckless activities. People drinking heavily before getting up stage to get high for Jesus. A more shocking sight is that of guys and ladies hooking up at different angles just like you see them in clubs! I am speaking as an EYE WITNESS!

Here comes other exciting meetings...

Jersey Sunday
Football Viewing Sunday
Jeans Sunday
Suya Night...

Imagine the early church with all these activities? Do you think the christian faith would have survived the first century? How would they have produced men who stood against persecutions with such weak, carnal, amusing, funny, and spiritually dull meetings?

These are all kinds of church programs that men have come up with as a result of trying to retain the youths in church. But what do we really think all these would achieve? Like what? Spiritual Growth? More love and passion for God? No way! Passion to save souls? For where?! It's ridiculous, to say the least, how badly things have deteriorated. What do you think Christ and His Apostles were busy doing? Trying to attract people at all cost? Isn't the command to preach and shake off the dust of our sandals when rejected still valid? Are we to attract people at all cost? No! It's mischief to use Paul's 'becoming all things to all men' to justify all these. This wasn't what he meant or did at all. What that simply means is that he presented the gospel to all men in a way they could understand it. He wasn't set out to appeal to them through entertainment and frivolous activities.

We are never to dance to people's tunes...

2 Timothy 4:2-4; "Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables."

Men have itching ears.
What are we to do?
Give them what they want? No!
Preach the word!
Reprove!
Rebuke!
Exhort with all longsuffering!

One thing is sure...

You can only grow in numbers with this wrong approach. Let me also quickly add this: Such churches are breeding criminals. Time will not tell. 'Time has told!' You know what's worse? The youths also know you are unserious! They know you all are deceiving yourselves! Ask them the simple question: Are you born again? They begin to stutter!

But to grow men in the knowledge of God? We must get down to serious work and say like the Apostles: We will give ourselves continually to prayers and to the ministry of the word! Acts 6:4
