INCESSANT ACCIDENTS ON NIGERIAN ROAD

The alarming increase in the incidence of accidents on Nigerian roads is a source of worry to many people within and outside the country. Roads accidents are daily occurrences across the country and many Nigerians have lost their lives through those accidents while many others have been maimed.

According to United Nations reports, about fifteen thousand Nigerians die yearly through accident, what could have been responsible for this alarming rate of accident? There are number of factors responsible.

First and foremost, majority of the drivers are reckless in driving. It seems as if there is no traffic laws in Nigeria as many drivers do not obey traffic rules. As a results of their poor attitude towards obeying traffic rules, many drives recklessly not minding the safety of other road users.

Secondly, many drives under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Government tried their best to stop people from taking hard drugs but they choose the destructive path, if the drugs in-take only affects the “drinkers” it would have been better, but it’s a pity that they destroy other people’s lives when they move out to the streets driving in their crazy cars.

Others reasons are; Teenage Drivers, driving without license, therefore leading to Bribing and Corruption between the Police force and the drivers. In order to flee from police cell they will grease the hands of the police to free themselves.

However, incidences of roads accident on Nigeria roads can be curbed, if not totally eradicated through these means; Traffic rules and laws must be enforced if we want to reduce the rate of accidents on our roads.

The Roads safety corps and other law enforcement agencies must be alive to their responsibilities. It is the wish of all well-meaning Nigerians and the international community to see Nigerian roads being safe for everybody. This can only be achieved if all hands are put on desk to ensure traffic rules are obeyed on our roads.

In conclusion, to build a peaceful society free from accidents, we need trustworthy service men to guide the roads jealously against any form of reckless driving. Again, our government should construct roads that will last longer, because bad road leads to accidents.

This is to the drivers, avoid drinking and smoking, always service your car and change all the damage parts in order to secure lives and property.
